Hi everyone, the worst of winter is over. It was very cold for a few days, but overall it was milder than usual. This is only the second winter we've spent entirely in Mongolia. The last two years we had left because of our furlough and because of Aemilii's surgery last year. We had gotten used to spending the harsh winter on the beaches of Costa Rica, but this year we had to stay here. In Mongolia, as most of you know, winter is quite cold and long… but pollution is the main problem. This year the pollution improved considerably, but it's still an issue, and we still have to wear pollution masks most days.

With the cold and pollution, health problems almost always follow. Azka got sick in January. He had a virus that gave him pneumonia, and he and Aemilii were in the hospital for five days. They treated us very well at the hospital, and when Azka was discharged, he was completely well. The hospital is very close to the house, so I walked there every day to bring them clothes and food. Right now, as I'm writing this newsletter, Aemilii and I have throat infections, but Azka didn't get it this time. I don't mean to sound pessimistic; this is simply the reality of winter in Mongolia. Cold, pollution, not going out much, illness, and long. Winter is officially over, but the temperature is still below freezing. March and April are months when the cold subsides, but the wind and dust increase, with no rain or snow.

What has happened in the last three months? We've survived; that's the Mongolian winter mentality: survival. We have it easy, in a heated apartment in the city, but many people in the countryside and their animals really have to survive the winter.

In December, we continued with the student club, and we had a Christmas party for them. Seventy students came and heard about the true meaning of Christmas. Chuduro, who received Christ last year and served as a summer teacher, attended this event. At the Christmas event, everyone had to write a letter to someone they were grateful for, and she wrote the letter to us. You'll hear more from Chuduro in this newsletter.

There were other Christmas events, such as the party for Aemilii's English students, the VETNet Christmas party, and the activity Aemilii organized for the safehouse where Azka stayed and where Aemilii now helps out once a month.

We also had our Bible study Christmas party. We finished our Old Testament plan, which consisted of 50 lessons, and this year we've already started the New Testament plan, which is another 50 lessons.

We also started a Bible study for young men at VETNet. Many of them have only been Christians for a few years, but they have a big heart and a desire to serve.

In January, we held a workshop for the summer camp teachers, something we had been planning for months. We spent three days at a hotel where we gave them talks and tools for evangelism and discipleship. For years, VETNet has needed summer camp teachers who have the mission of teaching English or other subjects and also the mission of sharing the gospel. Every year, it's difficult to find more than 100 people willing to go to the camp for six weeks. So, we are being more intentional about maintaining relationships with these teachers and better preparing them. One of them is Chuduro. Originally, the three of us were going to attend this workshop, but Azka had just recovered from pneumonia, so only I went. One of the lessons I gave was about the overall story of the Bible and how it all points to Jesus. This is what the book I wrote and we printed last year is about. When I finished this lesson, Chuduro came up to me and said that this lesson and others had helped her understand better and answered questions she still had.

In February, Aemilii and I had to give several lessons, Bible studies, and devotionals. We have more time to prepare lessons in the winter. In Mongolia, the seasons are very different, and this makes our work different depending on the season. In winter, we have more time to prepare lessons; I work in the office and help with videos and other materials. Aemilii gives English lessons and prepares materials for summer school.

One of the most important holidays in Mongolia is Tsagaan Sar, which is basically the Lunar New Year. On this holiday, you have to visit family members in order of oldest to youngest. First the grandparents, then their siblings, then parents and aunts and uncles. When you finish visiting all the older members of the family, they stay at the house and receive the younger relatives. During those days, you have to wear traditional clothing and eat traditional food, and everything has a protocol. Since we aren't  “family", we don't visit many houses. But some friends do invite us. I don't complain about having to visit a few houses because the traffic in the city gets quite heavy, and we have to eat at each house the same meal.

Little by little, the days are getting longer and the weather is warming up. We're already looking forward to going out into the countryside and other activities. We already have some plans we can share with you. In March, we have another conference for rural Christian leaders where we expect 50 leaders to learn about the New Testament. In April, we have another training session for summer teachers, and I'll be going on a short trip to the Govi ​​Altai province. In May, I'll be going to a conference of our organization, ABWE, in Hong Kong with team leaders from other countries in Asia. In June, we'll go to the Zavkhan province to help at the summer school. And in July, we'll go to the summer school in Khuvsgul, this time with Aemilii's parents who are going to visit us. And many more plans and projects.

This year is different because we have Azka. And we couldn't be happier and more grateful for him. His name means Joy, and he truly is always happy. He is our biggest prayer request. We are still struggling with the paperwork to get official foster care documents, and God willing, eventually adoption. God knows our hearts, and we believe that what's best for him is to be with us. His family's situation is not good, and we want to avoid at all costs him having to return to that place. But we know that God is sovereign, that His plans are the best, that He can perform miracles. We ask that you continue to pray for his situation, that God will open doors, and that we can have his paperwork soon so we can have a little more stability and peace.

I recently had to give a devotional about faith. And if there's one thing I've learned, it's that faith isn't trusting that something will happen, but trusting that God is in control. Since God put it on our hearts to come to Mongolia in 2018, He has been constantly working and shaping our faith, teaching us to submit to His will and let Him guide us. Our attitude must be like in the book of Daniel, before the king forcing them to worship his image.

Daniel 3:16-18

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

We don't need to defend ourselves; God is the one who defends us. God has the power to perform miracles, but even if He doesn't, we will still continue to worship the one true God.

Hola a todos, lo más duro del invierno ya pasó. Unos días estuvo muy frío pero en general estuvo más suave que lo normal. Es apenas el segundo invierno que pasamos completo en Mongolia. Los últimos dos años habíamos salido porque nos tocaba y por la cirugía de Aemilii el año pasado. Ya nos habíamos acostumbrado a pasar el duro invierno en las playas de Costa Rica pero este año nos tocó quedarnos aquí. En Mongolia como la mayoría de ustedes ya saben el invierno es bastante frío y largo… pero la contaminación es el principal problema. Este año la contaminación mejoró considerablemente, pero aún es un problema y aún hay que salir con mascarilla la mayoría de días. 

Con el frío y la contaminación casi siempre vienen problemas de salud. Azka se enfermó en Enero. Tuvo un virus que le dio neumonía y estuvo con Aemilii cinco días en el hospital. En el hospital nos trataron muy bien y cuando Azka salió ya estaba completamente bien. El hospital queda muy cerca de la casa así que yo iba todos los días caminando a llevarles ropa y comida. Ahorita mismo cuando escribo este boletín Aemilii y yo tenemos infección en la garganta, pero esta vez a Azka no le dio nada. No quiero sonar pesimista, simplemente todo esto es la realidad del invierno en Mongolia. Frío, contaminación, no salir mucho de la casa, enfermedad, y largo. El invierno oficialmente ya pasó pero todavía la temperatura está por debajo de los 0°C. Marzo y Abril son meses donde el frío disminuye, pero el viento y el polvo aumenta sin lluvia o nieve. 

¿Qué ha pasado en los últimos tres meses? Hemos sobrevivido, esa es la mentalidad del invierno en Mongolia, sobrevivir. Nosotros la tenemos fácil, en un apartamento con calefacción en la ciudad pero muchas personas en el campo y sus animales de verdad tienen que sobrevivir el invierno. 

En Diciembre seguimos con el club de estudiantes, y tuvimos la fiesta de Navidad para ellos. 70 estudiantes llegaron y oyeron acerca del verdadero significado de la Navidad. A este evento fue Chuduro que el año pasado recibió a Cristo y fue como maestra de verano. En el evento de Navidad había que escribir una carta a alguien que estuvieran agradecidos. Y ella nos escribió la carta a nosotros. Van a oír más de Chuduro en este boletín.

Hubo otros eventos de navidad. Como la fiesta de los estudiantes de Ingles de Aemilii. La fiesta de navidad de VETNet. La actividad que tuvo también Aemilii para la casa refugio donde estuvo Azka y ahora Aemilii va a ayudar una vez al mes. 

También tuvimos la fiesta de Navidad de nuestro estudio de Biblia. Terminamos nuestro plan del Antiguo testamento que fueron 50 lecciones y ya empezamos este año el Nuevo Testamento que son otras 50 lecciones. 

También empezamos un estudio Bíblico para hombres jóvenes en VETNet. Muchos de ellos tienen pocos años de ser cristianos pero tienen un gran corazón y deseo de servir. 

En Enero tuvimos un taller para las maestras de verano, esto lo veníamos planeando hace meses. Fuimos 3 días a un hotel donde les dimos charlas y herramientas para evangelizar y discipular. Por años VETNet ha necesitado maestras de verano que tienen la misión de enseñar Ingles u otras materias y también la misión de llevar el evangelio. Cada año cuesta conseguir a más de 100 personas que quieran ir por 6 semanas al campo. Así que estamos siendo más intencionales en mantener las relaciones con estas maestras y prepararlas mejor. Una de ellas es Chuduro. Originalmente a este taller íbamos a ir los 3 pero la Neumonía de Azka acababa de pasar así que solo fui yo. Una de las lecciones que di fue acerca de cuál es la historia general de la Biblia y como todo apunta a Jesus. De esto se trata el libro que escribí y que imprimimos el año pasado. Cuando terminé esta lección Chuduro se me acercó y me dijo que esa lección y otras le ayudaron a entender mejor y le respondieron preguntas que todavía tenía. 

En Febrero Aemilii y yo tuvimos que dar varias lecciones, estudios de Biblias y devocionales. Tenemos más tiempo para preparar lecciones en el invierno. En Mongolia las estaciones son muy diferentes, y esto hace que nuestro trabajo también sea diferente por temporadas. En invierno tenemos más tiempo para preparar lecciones, yo trabajar en la oficina y ayudar con videos y otros materiales. Aemilii dar lecciones de inglés y preparar materiales para la escuela de verano. 

Uno de los feriados más importantes en Mongolia es el Tsagaan Sar, que básicamente es el año nuevo lunar. En este feriado hay que visitar a las familias en orden de mayor a menor. Primero los abuelos, sus hermanos, luego padres y tíos. Cuando se termina de visitar a todas las personas mayores de la familia, entonces se quedan en la casa recibiendo a los familiares menores. En esos días hay que vestir ropa tradicional y comer comida tradicional y todo tiene un protocolo. Como nosotros no somos familia, pues no visitamos muchas casas. Pero igual algunos amigos nos invitan. Yo no me quejo de tener que visitar tantas casas porque el tráfico en la ciudad se pone bastante difícil y en cada casa hay que comer. 

Poco a poco los días se van haciendo más largos y el clima se va calentando. Ya estamos deseando salir al campo y otras actividades. Ya tenemos algunos planes que les podemos adelantar. En marzo tenemos una conferencia más para líderes cristianos del campo donde esperamos 50 líderes que van a aprender acerca del Nuevo Testamento. En Abril tenemos otro entrenamiento para las maestras de verano, y yo iré en un viaje corto a la provincia de Govi Altai. En Mayo iré a una conferencia de nuestra organización ABWE en Hong Kong con los líderes de equipo de otros países en Asia. En Junio iremos a la provincia de Zavkhan a ayudar en la escuela de verano. Y en Julio igual a la escuela de verano en Khuvsgul, esta vez con los padres de Aemilii que nos van a visitar. Y muchos planes y proyectos más. 

Este año es diferente porque tenemos a Azka. Y no podríamos estar más felices y agradecidos con él. Su nombre significa Gozo, y de verdad que él siempre está feliz. Nuestra mayor petición de oración es el. Todavía estamos batallando con los papeles. Para tener papeles oficiales de su acogimiento, y si Dios lo permite eventualmente adopción. Dios conoce nuestro corazón, y nosotros creemos que lo mejor para él es que esté con nosotros. La situación de su familia no es buena, y queremos evitar a todo costo que el tenga que volver a ese lugar. Pero sabemos que Dios es soberano, que sus planes son los mejores, que él puede hacer milagros. Les pedimos que sigan orando por su situación, que Dios abra puertas y que podamos tener sus papeles pronto para tener un poco más de estabilidad y tranquilidad. 

Recientemente tuve que dar un devocional acerca de la fe. Y si hay algo que he aprendido es que la fe no es confiar en que algo va a pasar, sino es confiar en que Dios tiene el control. Desde que Dios puso en nuestro corazón venir a Mongolia en el 2018. El ha trabajado constantemente y moldeado nuestra fe. A someternos a su voluntad y dejarnos llevar. Nuestra actitud tiene que ser como en el libro de Daniel, ante el rey obligandolos a adorar su imagen.

Daniel 3:16-18Sadrac, Mesac y Abednego respondieron:—Rey Nabucodonosor, no hace falta que nos defendamos ante usted.  Si se nos arroja al horno en llamas, el Dios al que servimos puede librarnos del horno y de las manos de Su Majestad. Pero incluso si no lo hace, queremos que sepa, Su Majestad, que no serviremos a sus dioses ni adoraremos la estatua que usted ha erigido.

No hace falta defendernos, Dios es quien nos defiende. Dios tiene el poder de hacer milagros, pero aun asi si no lo hace, igual seguiremos adorando al único y verdadero Dios.
