Hello everyone. I have waited so long to write this first newsletter from Mongolia! I can hardly believe it’s happening! We arrived last Saturday, May 21st at 10 am at the UlanBaatar Airport. God took care of everything in an incredible way. Honestly, I was a little scared during the trip since we bought the tickets from South Korea to Mongolia separately from the tickets from Minnesota to South Korea. Normally, this is not a big problem, but with Covid it could be. Due to covid restrictions, we had to make sure that we would not have to do customs in South Korea or else they would have asked us for a lot of paperwork. This was not the case and we managed to have our bags sent through for the entire trip to Mongolia and we did not have to go through customs. Praise God!
I don't know about you, but I’ve probably watched too much of the show “Airport Alert” . This made me nervous as we passed through costumes. I was nervous that we would be stopped. This was not the case, we were not asked even a single question. Glory to God!
After waiting for our 6 bags, we walked out of the airport to a fairly large welcome committee. Two families from the United States and a couple Mongolian teammates. After picking us up, they took us straight to our apartment and we love it! It may not be like our last home but to us it really is a blessing for many reasons. For starters, the layout and look of the apartment is clean and modern and has a nice view of the skyline and horizon. Also, the location is great for us. The supermarket is close, our office is literally next door and there are lots of restaurants nearby. And guess what, we have a guest room. So, anyone who wants to come is more than invited! The second reason why we like the apartment is because we have not had a “home” for 3 months and we are happy to have a little stability and to make this place our own. We have received a lot of help from the people here, and they have made our transition super smooth.
Something we have been warned about many times is the food. People have told us that it is not ideal. However, so far we have really liked it! One day we ate a typical dish that is very similar to a Costa Rican dish. Rice, meat in gravy and salad. In general the taste is similar.
Something very nice that this organization does is that every day there is a morning devotional. We get to lead devotional on Friday. To be entirely honest with you, recently I haven’t had very constant personal devotional time. So, that got me thinking about doing the devotional on the story of Martha and Mary from Luke 10:38-42. This story talks about how Martha invited Jesus to her house, but she was too busy with other things. Meanwhile Mary, her sister, was spending time with Jesus. Martha became irritated that Mary was simply hanging out with her guest while she was focused on other things. Well, in this last month I have felt a lot like Martha, and very little like Mary. I haven't taken the time to enjoy what God is doing. But in the midst of all this transition, God has given me an unexpected gift... "Jetlag". Jet leg for me feels like my body does not know what time it is or when it is time to be awake or when to sleep. Well, since we arrived I've gotten up at 3 or 4 am. I have taken this opportunity to take time to read and pray every day. Although I hope that my internal clock adjusts better, I hope that my internal Mary remains in charge while Martha moves to the side.
In this coming month we hope to finish adapting to daily life. We want to buy some things that are missing for the apartment, get a local phone, find all the necessary places we need to know, make sure that the cards and ATMs work, etc. After this month, on June 17th we will go out to the countryside in Mongolia for 6 weeks to make our first short trip. We are very excited to see what God has for Mongolia. I don’t think we will have time to send our next newsletter until we return around July 25th. Then we will send you a full report! Hola a todos. Ustedes no saben cuanto esperé este momento, en el que les iba a poder escribir un boletín desde Mongolia. Llegamos el 21 de Mayo a las 10 am al Aeropuerto de UlanBaatar. Dios se encargó de todo de una manera increíble, honestamente tenía un poco de miedo durante el viaje ya que el tiquete de Corea del Sur a Mongolia lo compramos a parte del de Minnesota a Corea del Sur. Normalmente esto no es un gran problema, pero con Covid si, ya que ocupábamos asegurarnos de que no tendríamos que hacer aduanas en Corea o de lo contrario nos pedirían muchos papeles más. Este no fue el caso y logramos que nos mandaran las maletas el viaje completo hasta Mongolia y que no tuviéramos que hacer aduanas.
Yo no sé ustedes, pero yo he visto más de lo que debería del programa “Alerta Aeropuerto”. Me pone nervioso a la hora de tener que entrar con una visa de trabajo y en mi mente nos iban a cuestionar porque estábamos en Mongolia. Esto no fue el caso, no nos hicieron ni una sola pregunta. ¡Gloria a Dios!
Después de esperar por nuestras 6 maletas, salimos del aeropuerto y teníamos un comité de bienvenida bastante grande. Dos familias de Estados Unidos y un par de personas de Mongolia de la organización. Luego de recogernos nos llevaron a nuestro apartamento, el cual es muy bonito. Y lo vemos bonito por dos razones: La primera es porque es realmente bonito y es perfecto para nosotros y además queda en una muy buena locación. El supermercado queda cerca, donde vamos a estar trabajando queda cerca, restaurantes cerca. Y tenemos un cuarto de invitados para el que quiera venir. Realmente el que quiera venir está invitado! La segunda razón porque nos gusta el apartamento es porque tenemos 3 meses de no tener un “hogar” y nos pone felices tener un poco de estabilidad y hacer este lugar nuestro. Hemos recibido mucha ayuda de las personas aquí, y han hecho nuestra transición muy fácil.
Algo que siempre nos habían comentado mucho que es difícil de Mongolia, era la comida. La verdad hasta el momento ha sido increíble. Un día comimos un plato típico que es muy parecido a un plato costarricense. Arroz, carne en salsa, ensalada. Y en general el sabor es parecido.
Algo muy bonito que hace esta organización es que todos los días hay un devocional en la mañana. Esta primera semana nos toca dirigirlo el viernes. Con tanta mudanza, logística, planeamiento, etc, la verdad que no he tenido tiempo para tener un tiempo de devocional constante. Asi que eso me hizo pensar en hacer el devocional en la historia de Marta y Maria. Lucas 10:38-42. Esta historia habla de como Marta invitó a Jesús a su casa, pero estaba muy ocupada en otras cosas. Mientras tanto Maria, su hermana, estaba pasando el tiempo con Jesús. Marta estaba indignada porque Maria estaba simplemente pasando el tiempo con su invitado mientras ella estaba enfocada en otras cosas. Pues en este último mes me he sentido mucho como Marta, y muy poco como Maria. No he sacado el tiempo para disfrutar lo que Dios está haciendo. Pero en medio de toda esta transición, Dios me ha dado un regalo inesperado… El “Jetlag” esa sensación de que el cuerpo no sabe qué hora es ni cuando es tiempo de estar despierto ni cuando dormir. Pues desde que llegamos me he levantado a las 3 o 4 am. Y he aprovechado para sacar un tiempo para leer y orar todos los días. Aunque espero que mi reloj interno se ajuste mejor, espero que mi Maria interna siga al mando mientras Marta es la pasajera.
En este mes que viene esperamos terminar de adaptarnos, comprar algunas cosas que faltan a la casa, conseguir teléfono local, encontrar todos los lugares necesarios, asegurarnos de que las tarjetas y los ATM sirven, etc. Después de este mes, el 17 de Junio salimos al campo en Mongolia por 6 semanas a hacer nuestro primer viaje, estamos muy emocionados por ver lo que Dios tiene para Mongolia. Seguramente mandaremos el próximo boletín hasta que volvamos de este viaje y podamos darles un reporte completo.
