Hello friends. The temperatures in Mongolia are slowly rising. But the wind also picks up, so it still feels cold, and we still have to wear our winter clothes. The last newsletter we wrote was in early February. February and March have been months for getting ready. Getting ready in many ways. And I want to tell you why.
Every Wednesday I am in charge of a Bible study at the organization. I'm doing it as inductive Bible study to teach them how to read and understand the Bible themselves. Together we go step by step getting the main message out of each passage. This past Wednesday I chose to study Daniel 3.
If you don't know or remember what happens in Daniel chapter 3. Here's a summary: In Babylon the king makes a gold statue and forces everyone to worship the statue. Daniel's friends refuse to worship it. The king threatens them that if they do not worship the statue they will be thrown into a blazing furnace. They hold their position and refuse to worship the statue. The king sends them to the blazing furnace, but nothing happens to them and they come out alive. The king rewards them and acknowledges God.
On Friday the 17th of this month I was sleeping and I was dreaming that I was in a lot of pain. I woke up and it turned out that I did have a lot of pain in the back area. I immediately knew what was happening to me because it had already happened to me a few years ago. The pain was a kidney stone. Thank God someone from the organization took us to the hospital. When I got to the hospital the pain increased. I had to vomit from the pain I was in. I was sweating, I couldn't find a position where it didn't hurt. They put me on a bed to give me pain medicine but laying down the pain was greater. When I was in that pain, I just asked God to take away the pain, to take away the stone, to do something. But, the pain continued for some minutes until the medicine took effect. They did an exam, but the doctor didn't speak English. We kind of understood that the stone had to come out by itself in the next few days, that it was too small to attempt something invasive. And to come back on Tuesday for the specialist to see me and review the exam.
Now I come back to chapter 3 of Daniel. For me, the most important part of chapter 3 of Daniel is in the answer that the friends give to the king when they are threatened with throwing them into the furnace.
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”
Daniel 3:16-18
They had something very clear. God had all the power to free them, but they understood that if God did not deliver them from the furnace. God was still their God.
I have read this story many times, but on Friday I forgot its meaning. On Friday when I was in the hospital, I was in a lot of pain. I asked God to take away my pain and to take away the stone. Since it didn't happen, I was disappointed. This stone would put at risk our trip in April. It meant that at any moment I was going to be in pain again. That I had to take drugs for several days. Time passed, and Tuesday arrived. Throughout the weekend I had no pain, but the medicines had some side effects.
We arrived at the hospital, after some problems because they had not scheduled the appointment. The doctor received me. He reviewed the exams from Friday. He told us: The stone is no longer there. The stone probably came out on Friday, because there is nothing in the exam. And there is no more pain. Everything is fine, stop taking the medicines, and you can continue with your life normally.
God reminded me that he is God, I was disappointed that he had not removed the stone from me, but he had. This has given me strength and hope. God is preparing us this year. Although we are almost in April, the truth is that April is when our ministry really starts and field trips begin. We felt the beginning this last Friday March 24th. We had a full day of prayer and worship at the organization. Where again it was a preparation for what is to come this year.
This year we are working on a project to help Christians in the countryside to grow. We are creating customized discipleship materials for Mongolia, with Mongolian illustrations and metaphors. We want to create a network with pastors and Christian leaders in the towns to connect all Christians so they don’t get lost.
On April 2nd we leave on our first trip to the Selenge province. We come back on April 13th, we will be in 4 or 5 towns. One of them is 4 kilometers from Siberia, Russia. In May we will go on another trip to Bayankhongor province. In the summer we will probably go to Zavkhan, same as last year.
We are very excited for what is to come. On Friday, when we had a day of worship and prayer, we closed with a Christian song written in Mongolian. The lyrics are incredible, and we sang it with the entire organization, ready to go to the field and bring Mongolia to Christ.

Hola amigos. Las temperaturas en Mongolia poco a poco van subiendo. Pero el viento también aumenta, por lo que todavía se siente frío, y todavía tenemos que usar la ropa de invierno. El último boletín que escribimos fue a principios de Febrero. Febrero y Marzo han sido meses de preparación. Preparación en muchos sentidos. Y les quiero contar porque.
Todos los miércoles tengo a cargo un estudio Bíblico en la organización. Lo estoy haciendo de manera inductiva para enseñarles a como leer y entender la Biblia ellos mismos. Juntos vamos paso por paso sacando el mensaje principal de cada pasaje. Este miércoles pasado elegí que estudiaramos Daniel 3.
Si no conocen o recuerdan que pasa en Daniel capítulo 3. Aquí un resumen: En Babilonia el rey hace una estatua de oro y obliga a todos a adorar la estatua. Los amigos de Daniel, se rehúsan a adorarla. El rey los amenaza que si no adoran la estatua serían tirados en un horno de fuego. Ellos se mantienen y no adoran la estatua. El rey los manda al horno de fuego, pero nada les pasa y salen vivos. El rey los recompensa y reconoce a Dios.
El viernes 17 de este mes estaba durmiendo y estaba soñando que tenía mucho dolor. Me desperté y resultó que sí tenía mucho dolor en la espalda. Inmediatamente sabia que me estaba pasando porque ya me había pasado hace unos años. El dolor era una piedra en un riñón. Gracias a Dios alguien de la organización nos llevó al hospital. Cuando llegué al hospital el dolor incrementó. Tuve que vomitar por el dolor que tenía. Estaba sudando, no encontraba una posición en que no me doliera. Me pusieron en una cama para ponerme medicina para el dolor pero acostado el dolor era mayor. Cuando estaba en ese dolor, solo le pedía a Dios que se llevara el dolor, que se llevara la piedra, que hiciera algo. Pero, el dolor siguió por unos minutos hasta que la medicina hizo efecto. Me hicieron un examen, pero el doctor no hablaba inglés. Más o menos le entendimos que la piedra tenía que salir por sí misma en los próximos días, que era muy pequeña para intentar algo invasivo. Que volviera el Martes para que el especialista me viera y revisará el examen.
Ahora vuelvo al capítulo 3 de Daniel. Para mi la parte más importante del capítulo 3 de Daniel está en la respuesta que los amigos le dan al rey cuando los amenaza con tirarlos al horno.
Sadrac, Mesac y Abednego le respondieron a Nabucodonosor: —¡No hace falta que nos defendamos ante Su Majestad! Si se nos arroja al horno en llamas, el Dios al que servimos puede librarnos del horno y de las manos de Su Majestad. Pero, aun si nuestro Dios no lo hace así, sepa usted que no honraremos a sus dioses ni adoraremos a su estatua.
Daniel 3:16-18
Ellos tenían algo muy claro. Dios tenía todo el poder de liberarlos, pero ellos entendían que si igual Dios no los libraba del horno. Dios iba a seguir siendo su Dios.
He leído esta historia muchas veces, pero el viernes se me olvidó. El viernes cuando estaba en el hospital y tenía mucho dolor. Yo le pedí a Dios que me quitara el dolor y que me quitara la piedra. Como no sucedió, yo estaba desilusionado. Esta piedra ponía en peligro la posibilidad de nuestro viaje en Abril. Significaba que en cualquier momento iba a tener dolor de nuevo. Que tenía que tomar medicamentos por varios días. El tiempo pasó, y llegó el martes. En todo el fin de semana no tuve dolor, pero las medicinas tuvieron efectos.
Llegamos al hospital después de algunos problemas porque no habían agendado la cita. El doctor me recibió. El vio los exámenes del viernes. Nos dijo: La piedra ya no está ahí. La piedra seguro salió el mismo viernes, porque en el examen no hay nada y ya no hay dolor. Está todo bien, deje de tomar las medicinas, y puede seguir con su vida normal.
Dios me recordó que él es Dios, yo estaba decepcionado porque no me había quitado la piedra. Pero si lo había hecho. Esto me ha dado fuerzas y esperanza. Dios nos está preparando este año. Aunque el año ya casi está en Abril, la verdad es que aquí en nuestro ministerio Abril es cuando empieza de verdad. Empiezan los viajes al campo. Esto lo sentimos este viernes pasado el 24 de Marzo. Tuvimos un día completo de oración y adoración en la organización. Donde de nuevo fue una preparación para lo que viene este año.
Este año estamos trabajando en un proyecto para ayudar a los cristianos en el campo a crecer. Estamos creando materiales de discipulado personalizados para Mongolia, con ilustraciones y metáforas de Mongolia. Queremos crear una red con los pastores y líderes cristianos en los pueblos para conectar a todos los cristianos y que no se pierdan.
El 2 de Abril salimos en nuestro primer viaje a la provincia de Selenge. Regresamos el 13 de Abril, estaremos en 4 o 5 pueblos. Uno de ellos a 4 kilómetros de Siberia, Rusia. En Mayo iremos en otro viaje a la provincia de Bayankhongor. En el verano seguramente iremos a Zavkhan igual que el año pasado.
Estamos muy emocionados por lo que se viene. El viernes que tuvimos el día de adoración y oración, cerramos con una canción cristiana escrita en Mongol. La letra es increible, y cantarla en medio de toda la organización, lista para ir al campo y traer Mongolia a Cristo.
Será proclamado a todo el mundo con el sonido del vino.
